Love it or hate it, where you come from instils a longing and curiosity which sometimes manifests itself as homesickness when you're one of the many diaspora. You don't have to be 'in your cups' to experience these feelings.
The Quiet Man watched for the umpteenth time, the mournful sound of Clannadh playing 'Harry's Game' or the lingering memory of the taste of Tayto Crisps, Lyons Tea, Emerald Sweets or Galtee Cheese Triangles. All of these are guaranteed to tug at even the stoniest of hearts. The maudlin sound of a 'come-all-ye' would bring forth a moistening of eyes and remembrance of previous days and times. Progress moves relentlessly forward, the house has been bulldozed, the past has moved on but the memories remain.
In former times I would often see random images of Nenagh on the Internet. Some of these images would invoke memories of childhood and the formative years spent growing up in and around Nenagh. I would stop and ponder to think about which shop was near there, what preceded that building or why has that Road disappeared.
Returning to Nenagh and finding it had it's very own Ring Road was a shock. .....and these new estates, where did they spring from. You cling to the image and memory of what was but there never appeared to be a central location for these images and on some social sites the poster of the image has the power to exclude who may see the memory or censor any input.
There doesn't appear to be a central database or repository for Nayna memories.
Being a fully paid up member of that far-flung Nenagh diaspora, I cling to these images as a connection to my childhood & my roots.
To this end I have collated images I have found on the internet. Many have unknown credits as to ownership. A large amount has been sourced from the National Library of Ireland. Some are of unknown provenance while others have been unintentionally provided. Credit must be given to Rob Toohey, Paddy Mackey & Brendan Treacy for some of these. I hope to add to the collection as I acquire more. This project isn't for financial gain. It is to share a mutual background and history and perhaps, enlighten our descendants. If you see an image that you believe may have originated with you or your family, let me know and I'll credit the photo.
I am currently working on a similar page for ordinary Nayna people you may not have heard of but who were involved in extraordinary deeds.
