Derrycastle (Cahir Conor, Cathair Conchubhair )

Derrycastle Model Farm School in Killary, to the west of Tountinna and just north of Englishtown (Baile Gallda), established as an Agricultural Boarding school for the local community by Francis Spaight of Derrycastle Demense - (1850). The idea was to educate the locals in up-to-date farming practices.

Impressive Spaight family mausoleum to be found at the former Castletownarra Church (1810 - 1850)

Pamphlet sketch of the Barque, Francis Spaight,  named for it's owner, which was waterlogged on a return voyage from New Brunswick to Limerick. The boat turned turtle but was eventually righted again by removing the masts. However all the water and provisions were spoiled. Without access to food and water for 16 days, four of the crew were cannibalised after drawing lots as per Custom of the Sea. The survivors were eventually picked up.
