Rent an Irish Cottage - I must admit to having stayed in a similar complex at Loop Head. Traditional romanticised cottage living with all the modern conveniences and a short walk from a music pub
Vintage Puckane Crafts wooden marquetry plaques from the 1970's. The company was set up by artist and Presbyterian Minister named Carlos Lantis from Cincinnati, Ohio. He had intended holidaying in Ballyvaughan in Clare but somehow ended up in Puckane. His one week holiday ended up as 10 weeks spent in the Puckane Rent an Irish Cottage's. He returned to the State's, sold up and returned to Ireland with his family. With grants and advice from Shannon Development and the local council, Puckane Crafts was born. These very deceptively easily made looking and effective designs were at once a hit with the locals and tourists alike. Each finished piece is signed by the artist involved.

Peterfield/Johnstown
18th century engraving by Jonathan Fisher of Peterfield in its dramatic setting
Peterfield or Johnstown House from a 1960's photo. Another William Leeson designed property, the layout of three central windows close together is one of Leeson's signature trademarks and is to be found on some of his other buildings. In the closely knit Ascendancy class that he dealt with, they would each have been aware of each others building designs and solutions. Compare the layout to Prior Park below
Gates to what was once Johnstown House. Built to a design by William Leeson in 1777, the house was de-roofed in the 1940's and allowed to decay. It has since been demolished. It was originally the residence of Peter Holmes, M.P. for Banagher. Not at all shy of self advertising (Peter (Holmes) St in Nenagh). For a while the estate was known as Peterfield. The estate was later bought for £13,000 by William Headech, secretary to the Imperial Slate Company in nearby Portroe which he later bought for himself. Under Headech's ownership Petersfield House was renamed Johnstown.

A 1776 William Leeson designed structure built for James Otway. The windows look somewhat disportionate to the walls crying out to be either bigger or have more inserted. The building later became the seat of the Waller family who held it until the 1980's
