ST MARYS R.C.

Following a competition to replace the Chapel Lane R.C. Church of 1841, this was the winning entry. The site was originally called Derrynenagh and was the site of a large Oak Wood, this was later a Barley field. The actual Church foundation stone was laid in 1892 and the Church was by and large complete by 1906. The internal decorations date from 1910

Capt. John J. McCormack

A very rare Memorial window and plaque in the Ladies side aisle dedicated to a member of the congregation. Captain McCormack was born in Castle St to merchant  John McCormack and his wife Sarah Spain. He served with the 27th Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Irish). He was mentioned in despatches in 1917,  but sadly died a month later. He is buried at Browns Copse in Pas De Calais, in France.
